A super simple explanation of how Joomla operates.

How does Joomla allow users to manage content, add or delete articles on a site, and maintain the site via a web browser interface? Joomla separates the content of the site, all the text, images, videos, podcast, usernames and passwords, and whatever else you may have in your content bin from the actual presentation of that content. All content is kept in a database on your server. The information on how to display that information is kept in a template. When Joomla is called on to serve a page from a browser, it gets the content for that page from the database, looks at the template files to see how it should be laid out, builds the page accordingly and sends the page to the browser.

When you are editing content from the Joomla Administrator interface, you are editing the contents of the database. The template is a group of files that define for Joomla how to layout the elements of your page. It tells Joomla where to put the menus, the content areas, the header and footer, what background graphics to use, what fonts to use, all of that sort of thing. A Joomla template is not a simple thing and unless you have some technical chops you usually need a web designer or development person to either build or customize a template for you.

You can download free templates from many sites, or buy more professional level templates, and then customize them with your graphics and any special features you many want on your site.
