What is Google AdWords? And why should you be using it? It can take from six months to a year to get to the top of organic search engine listings, assuming you have all the elements in place to achieve that ranking. Let’s assume you have all of those elements. Your site is well designed so search engines can easily index it, properly loaded with your keywords in the content and in appropriate HTML tags and locations, has lots of quality inbound links to it (not junk links like from link farms), is content rich, and last but not least, has actually been submitted to search engines and directories so it can be listed. Let’s say you’ve done all that. Your page is chock full of information people will find useful – it’s not just a sales pitch – it’s keyword dense, it’s indexed, and there are links to it from all over the globe, from reputable authorities on your topic. It should rocket to the top of the organic search rankings, right? It may, one day. But this doesn’t happen overnight. Those companies with the top spots for popular keywords are working hard to stay there. And new competition is always moving in. The ante for those ratings, especially for hot keywords, is intense. It’s a constantly moving target, and you have to stay on it. Enter Google AdWords to the rescue. With Google AdWords, you can bid on keywords and get your ad posted in the ‘Sponsored Links’ portion of the search results page. AdWords is a pay-per-click (PPC) system that allows you to bid on the keywords of your choosing and compete for those visible spots on the search engine page. No longer are you hopelessly stuck on page 20 of the search results – you can bid yourself onto page one if that’s where you want to be, where you have a much better shot at getting some site traffic. But you do have to pay for those clicks. So it’s just as important to have your landing page (the page a person is taken to when they click on your AdWords ad), be as persuasive as possible to get that person to do whatever it is you want them to do: pick up the phone, sign up for your newsletter, or buy your product.
